Following an unbearable psychological suffering and long struggle with depression, a girl of 17 years in Netherlands, who survived rape in her childhood, has died after being assisted by the state to end her life.

Noa Pothoven, who has already written an award-winning book on her battle with depression, wrote a last Instagram post on Saturday. The post that said “I will die within a maximum of 10 days” was read by her 10,000 followers.

Her autobiographic book was titled ‘Winning or Learning’.

Noa died just a day after the posting. She was assisted to kill herself by a state-authorized clinic that helps with euthanasia. The process is legal in Netherlands under the Termination of Life on Request and Assisted Suicide Act of 2001.

The decision has to be approved by a physician who needs to certify that the individual’s pain is indeed insufferable.

In her last post on the private account, Noa wrote in her native language, “After years of fighting and fighting it is finished. I have now stopped eating and drinking for a while and after many conversations and reviews it has been decided that I will be released because my suffering is unbearable. It’s finished.”

While she decided not to eat and kill herself eventually, the state decided not to force feed her, thus indirectly assisting her in the process.

How incredibly sad. A young Dutch girl has legally euthanised herself at 17-years-old because she couldn’t handle the depression of being raped as a child.

Her death and the last Instagram post has triggered a debate on social media over whether she was mature enough to take such an extreme step, some have also criticized the Dutch laws that allow assisted suicide like the one in Noa’s case.

Others expressed grief at the sad demise of a teenager who couldn’t bear the prolonged suffering. Many expressed anger that the system had failed her and allowed her to be a victim of rape.
