Senator Ahmed Lawan from Yobe North has emerged as the Senate President.

Lawal was on Tuesday declared winner of the election to the office of the Senate Presidency of the 9th National Assembly after he polled the highest number of votes.

The election, which was presided by Mohammed Ataba-Omolori, saw the Yobe Senator scoring 79 votes after ballots sorting.

Also the Senator-elect for Delta Central, Ovie Omo-Agege has won the seat of deputy President of the 9th Senate.

He polled 67 votes to defeat his rival, Senator Ike Ekweremadu who polled 37 votes.

Ekweremadu who is the immediate past Deputy Senate President was surprisingly nominated by Chukwuka Utazi representing Enugu North Senatorial district.

Ekweremadu is of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while Omo-Agege is of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and has been adopted by the APC and President Muhammadu Buhari.
